Just...

Kind of feel very awkward when I look like a 바보, especially to myself. Don't really know what I'm feeling either. But I just don't like to be put into a situation where it seems like I'm trying too hard or I'm showing too much concern, especially when there are no boundaries.

And I don't like it when others who are not really close to me yet show me too much concern. Not in the bad way that I don't want them to show concern, but I would definitely question the motives behind the actions and more importantly I would tread dangerously on the line and need to stop myself from thinking that it means anything more than it should.

[Edit]
Actually thinking about it, if it were the other way round, i.e. Me showing concern for them like 'get enough rest', 'take care'. I wouldn't think much of it because it's just showing concern for a friend. But I just get affected when people treat me well, when I least expect it. And I guess that is how I am. I just need to learn that I shouldn't question the intentions and well, stop having double standards.

Don't think anyone knows what I'm talking about here but this is just for my own reference to see that I have sorted out my thinking. I may have sorted out my thinking but it still doesn't stop me from thinking the other way.

SSA2204: Nation building in Singapore

So I thought I'd do another module review before I leave for Korea. Shall review the SS module that I took. Don't really understand why people take more than one ss module. It's just a university requirement to me, so I guess the rest enjoy ss modules more.

So I took SSA2204: Nation building in Singapore. Took in Year 2011/2012 Sem 1.Bid points was quite high, I think 350 (round number, which means it probably was a year one who bidded this. I normally bid either 354 or 357), probably because of the year 1s bidding to fulfill this requirement in their first sem.

This is probably one of the more interesting ss modules, judging from its popularity. And it was really quite interesting as well. As the title suggests, it's a module about building a nation, which is almost similar to social studies in secondary school, with a lot more detail. There were two lecturers, Prof Albert Lau who covered the more history type of content such as colonial rule, merger with Malaya as well as independence, and Prof Sai Siew Min who covered the more thematic content such as housing and education. Luckily for me, both lecturers were quite interesting so it wasn't difficult to pay attention.

I enjoyed the lectures though it became a little boring sometimes. I enjoyed reading some of the readings as well. Some of them offered quite a fresh insight and perspective about the process of nation building itself as well as social immobility which I found to be quite insightful. But might I warn you first. There is really a lot of readings to read, which I think many didn't finish reading. I did read everything but I don't think it was very useful since the exam format is essays and you only show that you read the readings when you can quote the evidence from the readings and write them in, which sadly I didn't. I read so many but couldn't remember most of them. So I'd say just remember the significant ones and think of how you can structure them in your essays. And I would say giving a balanced viewpoint is very important, as always.

As for tutorials, it's once every fortnight, and it's going through of the essay question that we're supposed to prepare beforehand so that we can present to the class. But I was always lost and got terribly stressed after each tutorial session. It didn't really help that my tutor was not the type to provide model answers. Really don't know how I managed to study for the exams.

Assessment was 2 CAs, 10% each, 20% went to class participation and 60% for the final exam. The CAs didn't really matter because it's just 10% each. I didn't do very well for the CAs. Probably a B- and a B+ for each. Both CAs were rather source based because they gave us sources and asked some questions related to it. I wouldn't count on just the source alone because you need other information from the readings as well.

It would be better to participate during the tutorials to get that 20%. My tutor made us do a debate, so I think everyone got at least a little bit of marks. Final exam was 2 essays, one from each lecturer. During the exam, just write non-stop because there are a lot of arts students taking it as well and I'd think they are better at writing compared to me, a science student so I just gave many points and evidence. The essay writing format is really like O levels history. So it wasn't that hard. But I'd say I got lucky because the questions were quite straight forward in the sem I took it in. And I kind of expected those questions so I prepared for them beforehand. There are past year questions that you can refer to that can be downloaded from the library website so it'd be quite useful to prepare yourself for the type of questions they can ask. Personally I got quite a shock because the questions were really difficult (for the past year papers, that is).

So yep, I'd recommend this module to anyone who needs to fulfill the requirement. I learnt quite a bit from the readings and the lectures and not just the same old things from social studies. But the readings can pile up to quite a thick stack if you don't read them diligently every week because there really is a lot to read if you're not an arts student and prefer more factual and science-y content like me. But if you dislike social studies or writing essays(like me), maybe you can look for other modules that are MCQs like natural heritage sss1207 if I remember correctly!(:

Another baking post and ramblings

So I was really motivated and baked hazelnut praline muffins last week. It's nutella flavoured cupcakes with a nutella centre, topped with hazelnuts and a thin layer of sugar. The layer of sugar looks really nice like that.

Wasn't much of a success but I liked it, just saddening that my family didn't share my opinion. They commented that the cake part was too bland. It tasted quite sweet to me. The bland-ness was probably because of the nutella in the centre that was too sweet. They looked really nice when they first came out from the oven, but looked horrible after I had to refrigerate it because the sugar melted. Might bake this again but without the sugar on top and will toast the hazelnuts in the oven first for more crunch.

Attempted Jelly hearts last week as well but it was a major flop in terms of presentation. The jelly sank to the bottom while the digestive biscuit layer with cheese floated to the top. But! Almost all of them were polished off within 3 hours. Shall attempt them again when I have the time. Took some photos of the 4 pretty ones but it's in my phone. Will upload them another time.

Don't think I have much time to bake once I come back from Korea because I will have to start looking for a job and writing up my resume and cover letters. I want to work but I dread interviews. I'll save the depressing stuff for another day.

Finished 2 dramas within a span of a week. Can't believe my speed as well. These 2 dramas have become my favourite dramas of all time. I don't think any drama has had me continually watching and intrigued. For most dramas it's just going through the motion, watching them because I started watching them. But these 2, Rooftop prince and The moon that embraces the sun, have really good plots. Though I admit that I watched these 2 because there are actors whom I like, but the storylines are really good. Cried buckets for the moon that embraces the sun, a first since the Snow queen. I really liked the child actors. It's the first time the child actors took up 5 episodes of a drama (At least for me). Shall not be a spoiler and spoil anything. But yes, please do watch these 2 dramas if you're looking for something to pass your time(: Okay I'm aware my audiences do not watch a lot of Korean dramas so I shall stop going on about how good they are!(:

Really excited about my Korea trip!

LSM3232: Microbiology

Took this module in Year 2011/2012 Sem 1

A module very similar to LSM2203 (if I remember the code correctly, but it's experimental microbiology), just a little more in depth. We covered General, water, food and medical microbiology. As usual for microbio modules, there are lab reports to write. Each report amounted to very little of the final grade, though they required a lot of time to complete and get a good grade.

Content wise, the content was rather little compared to other modules like pharmacology and immunology, but there is still quite a bit to memorise, though it cannot be compared to the BMS ones.

Assesment: Can't really remember, but if I recall correctly, final exam was 60% (3 structured questions, 1 from each lecturer, with choices), CA was MCQ (As usual, everyone is bound to get almost full marks for this, so better to score), and 10% lab reports. Final exam was not too difficult but as usual, the bell curve pulls the average student down, at least that is what happens for me.

Practical sessions are just like the LSM2203 ones, culturing bacteria and observation, nothing much.

Overall: I didn't really enjoy this module, but it was good in a sense that it was rather 'slack' compared to the BMS modules I took in the same sem, so it didn't seem that heavy to me. The lecturers (Prof Sim and Prof Kevin) were really nice though.

Really don't remember much about this module. Will add on if I can remember(:

Thought Catalog

Been following thought catalog on twitter for some time now, and I like how they manage to put across what I feel so simply, when I have no idea how to express myself. Okay I have no one to blame but my poor language skills.

Just wanted to share something I felt would be applicable to me now, since I'm starting work soon. On dressing our age. Maybe not yet, but soon. An excerpt from Thought catalog : Why 20-Somethings Need To Start Dressing Better.(full post here)

"We have to finally stop being so scared of adulthood and understand that dressing with a certain level of sophistication is not a bad thing. At first, it might feel like you’re playing dress up but eventually it will settle into who you are. That’s the coolest part about letting your personal style mature. You really find yourself starting to enjoy it and then it becomes an accurate reflection of who you are"

Don't know why I posted this, just felt that it's an interesting point.

Food

Hi!

This is glutton Sam here. So I was just thinking of my Korea trip which is coming so soon. And I thought of a list of food to try while in Korea.

1. Number one on my list would have to be Ddeokbokki! I didn't like it initially, when I first tried it. I was thinking that it tastes so weird, but now I love it! I guess I'll be the only one eating in Korea because my family is not a fan of it. I'll have to say '아주머니 일인분 주세요!' ><

2. Samgyupsal
Pork belly! This is what all my dieting (well, almost) in Singapore is for. Okay I kid, dieting is to look good in clothes. To have pork belly which is full of saturated and trans fats wrapped in veggie and drizzled with sauce. Must. Have. This!

3. Bibimbap
My family loves this! So I foresee having this pretty often in Korea.

4. Kimchi
I really want to taste the different types of kimchi they have after having the typical nappa cabbage kimchi here in Singapore. Not sure if I can handle the spiciness, but there's always cold water to the rescue, right?

5. Mandoo (Dumplings)
Haha, after running man and Korean 2, I really want to try the mandoos. I wonder what's the difference between the Chinese one and Korean ones.

6. Bulgogi!
Actually this should rank higher in my list, like number 3. I seldom eat beef, but I really really like bulgogi!. The beef is sliced thinly and full of flavour.

I guess without pictures here, I'm just raving to myself. I'll take photos of these food when I have them in Korea and post them here when I get back:D

I've been surfing Gmarket Korea. I know right, online shopping even before I get to Korea. Just to see what to expect on the streets of Dongdaemun. Actually my friend recommended shopping online and have the stuff delivered to where we live, but I'm having second thoughts about it because I don't have a Korean phone number which is required. That aside, I think that is a really good idea because it will definitely be cheaper. But I'll see how it goes since I'll be bringing my laptop over. I'll be receiving my results when I'm in Korea): Don't know what to expect but I really just want to pass all my modules! Twelve more days! I don't think I've been this egg-cited since the Taiwan trip about 2 years ago. I think Korea will be more fun than Taiwan, at least we can wake up when we want and not rush like we did when we followed a tour in Taiwan.

Had a bad dream last night. Of all things, I dreamt of Tumor Bio. It was quite nonsensical, but still a little scary, you know how paranoid I am towards school stuff.

I'm paranoid to the extent that when attemping assignments, I write my name on the header so it appears on each page, but yet when submitting it into the box or tray or wherever, I still have the tendency to doubt whether I wrote my name. And when my friends ask me if I wrote my name on the assignment, I still need to think whether I wrote. Thinking about this, paranoia is quite a huge issue for me. Yet it's perceived as normal. Why is that? Just a random incident that happened on the last day of school when I had to submit 2 assignments. I got really flustered thinking I didn't write my name on the assignments and went back to check. But! The admin staff already took all the assignments which meant I couldn't check.

Saw many recipes online that I want to try, but sadly I can't yet because there are still cupcakes that I made. Don't you get upset when no one wants to eat what you made. I shall distribute them to friend when I meet them so that I can bake more often and try new food, yet not eat too much!:D I like all things peanut butter, chocolate and nutella(sometimes).

Taetiseo's Baby steps is on repeat now because I like the lyrics. And because of my goguma heart. kekeke

I still haven't gotten used to the idea of typing I, I, I all the way in my blog. So maybe I'll attempt another method of blogging. The I, I, I reminds me of someone who is so self centred. And I have no wish of following in his/her footsteps.

LSM3223 Immunology

Interesting module to learn about the body's immune system. T cells, B cells, Lymphocytes, antibodies and everything else. I would say this is an essential module for everyone because it ties in with so many other modules like LSM3212 Cardiopulmonary system, LSM3224 Molecular basis of human diseases, LSM3211 and even LSM4243 Tumor Biology. We learnt experimental techniques like immuno-blotting and flow cytometry which are really common techniques, as I came to know in the semester just past. Really useful for interpreting data from scientific papers and even data included in the lecture notes. So I'd say immunology is an essential module, better to take in your first semester of year 3.

Content wise, it was quite heavy, considering each lecturer had 2 sets of notes for one lecture. You can imagine them rushing through, and not to mention that this module was not webcasted which means that once you miss something, you really miss it. I bought the textbook because I couldn't catch what the lecturers were saying so I would say the textbook is useful for that purpose. And most diagrams were taken from the textbook as well, so I just read the captions to understand the diagrams since the lecturers really go too fast.

But I liked this module more than pharmacology because it was much more interesting than drugs which was more of biochemistry. It was interesting to learn about how long it takes for your body to make various antibodies and how they are made, B cell and T cell maturation and all. The worst part of the lectures were the lectures on hypersensitivity and the content covered by Prof Chew. I was seriously lost and dreaded the lectures. Didn't understand a single thing yet Prof Chew kept going on and on. The worst thing was that he said he would be testing application questions. Like what? I don't even understand what needs to be known and you want me to apply? And the reason why I was so lost was that his content cannot be found in the textbook. Lost means lost.

Lecturers: Prof Wong, Prof Chew FT, Prof Gan and Prof Grotenbreg. (Lecturers are different for different semesters)

Exam format: 1 CA (I think 30%) and 1 final exam (70%) (On a random note, sometimes I dislike modules that have such heavy weightage for the final exam because of the stress, and I found immunology questions really hard. But I guess if you like it enough, it's fine) Practical sessions not graded, no lab reports to do, so lab sessions were fun (for me at least) since it's not graded so my lab partner and I were rather slack although we still managed to get the desired results. We did immuno-blotting, blood coagulation and ELISA.

Not an easy module (maybe I'm just not smart enough) for sure, but I still recommend it because it's interesting and useful.

LSM3211: Fundamental Pharmacology

Saw a few google searches for LSM4243 directing to my blog so I decided to start doing some reviews for modules. But the LSM4243 review and others like PL1101e will have to come after the release of my results. For now, I'll do reviews for others I did in the past 5 semesters. Can't guarantee that I can remember everything so I might just selectively do some and the format may have changed as well. Hope they might be useful for some people.

So here goes!(:

Year 2011/2012 Semester 1

LSM3211 Fundamental Pharmacology

As you know from the module title, you can expect lots of drug names to memorise. Content wise, it is alot quite manageable because it's mostly stuff from year 2, but you need to know the drug names and how they work. That's the hard part. I think there are about more than a hundred names to memorise, but the good thing is that the lecturers (some of them) tell you which drugs to memorise. If you are not intending to do honors or do anything science related after you graduate, I suggest that you skip this module and take others instead. But I didn't regret taking this because it is indeed quite useful in everyday life, as in knowing what drugs you have been prescribed and its side effects, but the memorising was really not worth it!):

My lecturers were Prof Fred Wong, Prof Peter Wong, Dr Sethi and Prof P.K. Moore. Lectures were webcasted but I never watched a single one. The module consisted of 1 CA (23%) which was MCQs with true/false questions and negative marking, and final exam which consisted of 28 MCQs (same format as CA) and 3 essay questions (can choose questions). There were practical sessions as well, but they were quite slack because we just had to add reagents and get the data from the computer and input them into an excel file to get a graph and not to mention not graded.

In all, a good module to take if you are doing honors because it's a pre-requisite for many year 4 BMS modules. But I really almost went mad trying to memorise all the drug names.

SA Carnival

In an attempt to keep up with blogging, I shall blog about SA's carnival which I went to with Jiayen, Steph and Wanying. I would have felt 17 or 18 again if not for the students and other people who looked so much younger than me. But we were saying that we actually didn't look that much older, it was just how we felt. it was pretty fun, walking around the school compounds reminded me of so many memories, trainings at the field,  the different lockers which Steph and Wanying were pointing to, saying they once used them, and finally realising that they shared lockers. The usual canteen stores weren't open, so we couldn't have our favourite fried bee hoon, fries and chicken patty, not forgetting the really yummy ice blended fruit juices. Got to go back some day for those(: Who wants to go??:D Haha. Steph and I wore saints tees while everyone else wore their own clothes.

On 142!
Posing with the fish and chips which we shared
Steph and Wanying
There wasn't much food at SAJC so we went over to the junior school. We had sushi and fish and chips, and mint chocolate chip ice cream, which was really huge and worth it. But it was so huge we got sick of the taste towards the end. Still nice though. We saw the ferraris and other sports cars but didn't get to take a photo with it because it was quite expensive and we missed the timings as well.
Ice cream!(:
Suddenly at a loss for words because I haven't blogged in such a long time.
In all, I'm just glad that we went for it although all of us were busy with projects, assignments, tests, presentations and everything else. Because if we kept making excuses for ourselves, saying 'I have a test, I need to study, I need to mug, I cannot spare the time'. At that rate, we would have never gotten to meet up. In such events, I feel it's not the actual event that makes things memorable, but the company that we had, and that was exactly how I felt. And I felt that it was time well spent. We saw Mr Chay and even spoke with him for a little while, though we think he couldn't really remember us. But what can we expect. It's been 4 years since we graduated from SAJC. We saw Miss Low and our econs tutor Mrs Wong too.(:

Saw many other people who were from our batch. Felt that sense of familiarity though we don't know each other. We even stayed around to watch the Kiwi cup, which was a rugby match between the saints  and raffles alumni. There were 3 matches if I recall correctly, starting with the 50s, Under 50s, and the Under 30s. As expected, the most exciting match to watch was the under 30s since the players were fitter compared to the rest and there were fewer pauses and injuries as well. It was fun, munching on nachos and drinks while having our usual conversations, discussing what was happening since we did not know the scoring system and we got to know of the score from overhearing other people sitting close to us. And to make things worse, we sat at the wrong side, where most of the Raffles' supporters were. At that point in time, I wanted to be 17 again, with so many deadlines for assignments and final exams looming ahead. If I were 17 again, there wouldn't have been so many worries or frustrations, because it was only the A levels that mattered. All that mattered would have been trainings, small tests and tutorials. I only wanted to be 17, not 18. So then I wouldn't need to face the A levels. Okay that was a really silly thought because I was afraid of all my modules, especially LSM4243 which became my elective since I decided not to do honours.

We bought the 150th anniversary merchandise, though they were a little pricey. Afterall, how often do we get to have another 150th anniversary? Someday I might take that t-shirt out to wear, but not so soon because I don't have an occasion to wear it. On a random note, though, I saw a girl wear the exact same one I had in NUS the following Monday, and a few times after.

Before the rugby match started
Ending with a few more photos. I think this is the first time I blog with so many photos. SA won the match in the end.
The all familiar path I walked everyday
Didn't manage to get a nice shot of the bridge because it was so crowded. But I will try to get a better shot, if I get to go back again(:

Group photo that I already uploaded onto Facebook
I love instagram, which makes photos look so much better than the original. Taking this photo was somehow awkward because so many people were walking past us. But it turned out nice in the end. Ending here now. Till the next!(: I guess I like blogging afterall. I still have so much more to say, so much more thoughts to share. I guess sharing some of them here would be better than writing in my diary, something which I haven't done in months.

After a semester of writing so many lab reports and assignments, my ability to articulate my thoughts when I type has gotten much better. Something good that came out of it, I guess. But I'll save those for another day. I might do a review of modules I did, but I'll see how it goes.

Blog stats

I was just looking at my blog stats, and I know who these people are from the country that my blog has been viewed from. You know who you are, and for all of you, I'll try to update my blog more often(: I don't know who the one from China is though.

Longest entry in a few years

Hello to my 4 readers!

Today I decided to bake after having tasted cupcakes from Twelve cupcakes. Their cupcakes are super moist and yummy. Plus they use buttercream and not the normal whipped cream. My mum bought them for me and spent $35.50 on them. Felt so guilty but even she agreed it tasted good so at least its well spent.

So I wanted to use up my cream cheese which I bought 3 months ago, so I googled for cream cheese recipes and chanced upon this Chocolate cream cheese cupcakes from food.com . Decided to try it out. It was the first time I was so patient during baking. I'm usually impatient, dislike washing up, messing up the entire kitchen, spilling flour, sugar and almost everything on the table, but today was slightly better, probably because its the holidays and I'm not in any rush, so I had the luxury of time to slowly spoon the batter into the cases without spilling much (actually I feel weird blogging normal stuff, like day-to-day stuff because I normally blog about significant and well, when I am angry/annoyed/not in good moods, but I shall try blogging again(: ). End product pictures! First time I'm so majorly satisfied with what I baked! The previous red velvet cupcakes was a disaster): I think my mum will be so satisfied. It'd be a good Mothers' Day treat for my mum and grandma.
Doesn't it look so yummy? Haha okay sounds like self praise
After this successful attempt, I'm going to be more adventurous and try more recipes involving my favourite peanut butter and nutella. Will share them when I succeed! More to come!:D

In an attempt to blog more about myself, since this is what a blog is for, life has been treating me pretty well. Waking up whenever I want, watching shows and dramas, exercising regularly. Sounds like the life I have been dreaming of for the past 16 weeks or so. But this life is not to be, because I've graduated and need to look for a job soon. That will come after my Korea trip! So excited and looking forward to it.

On a side note, I'm really glad that I've gotten rid of people who only serve to make me feel bad about myself. As they always say, friends should complement one another and bring out the best. I don't need people who only want to put me down to make themselves feel good. No thanks and goodbye!

Won something from a blogshop for the very first time. Is it paranoia when I was thinking if I really won, and not just someone else with the same name as me. But it was me, hehe(: And got something I really really wanted for super long, okay not super long, just about 3 weeks. Haha, it's TTR's happy 100th denim dungaree skirt! While studying for exams, I saved the link to the post on my phone and kept looking at it during self proclaimed study breaks.

This is becoming a really long blogpost. I'll end here and continue when I feel like it again(:
