Ricciotti

Met up with my JC classmates at Star Vista for dinner some time back! To think of it I haven't seen them since 2 years ago where we met at Food for thought in Bugis with the exception of Steph and meeting Wan Ying randomly on the train and at Woodlands. This meet up was sparked by coincidentally meeting Wan Ying on the train and we met up the week after! It was a pity that she couldn't join us in the end because she was stuck in the lab till late): I sure hope we can meet soon again and not 2 years later.

We walked around Star Vista and finally decided on Ricciotti since Steph and I read favourable reviews about it. Sadly it was quite a disappointment):

This is pizzotto which was quite highly raved but I found it really very so-so. The crust is so thick and not to my fancy. The egg on top was a nice touch though it didn't make much difference to the taste. We actually googled some of the ingredients like pomodoro and I think it's a type of pasta sauce? And I feel that pizza is something that must be eaten hot since the crust becomes rubbery when it has cooled.

And capricciosa which also tasted similar to pizzioto, probably because it also has pomodoro.

We ordered these two 12" pizzas for 4 people to share and it was more than enough. And there was a promotion for pizzas, I think 2nd at half price so it was quite reasonable(: They have different promotions for different days of the week so it'd be good to check out which you'd like.

As always, it's the company over the food. Although we haven't met for 2 years, I was glad that we could still catch up like the times in jc. Can't believe it has been 6 years since I've met them, certainly hasn't felt that long to me, and the frequent instagram photos from Wan Ying that appear on my news feed makes me feel like we're always in contact.

Mee Goreng!

Last weekend, I attempted frying/cooking mee goreng for the family! It all happened when I asked my grandma to pick a noodle for me to cook and she chose mee goreng from a recipe book by Agnes Chang. I think she's quite a well known cook/baker in Singapore and Malaysia. I don't have the title of the recipe book right now but it should be something along the lines of Hawker Delights. I didn't follow the exact recipe so I'll just post the recipe that I modified.

500g yellow noodles (the flat ones instead of the round ones for hokkien prawn mee)
200g pork/chicken fillet (seasoned using any sauces like sesame oil, light soya sauce, pepper)
4 tablespoons tomato sauce
2 tablespoons chilli sauce
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
3 pieces tau gua (cut into small cubes)
1 onion (cut into strips)
5 stalks of chye sim
3 eggs
4 tomatoes (cut into wedges)
6 sticks imitation crab sticks (cut into cubes)
10-15 prawns, shelled
50 cents of beansprouts (don't know the exact weight and they usually sell it in terms of price)

Steps (Posting the steps that I used instead of the exact steps from the book)
1. Stir fry tau gua until its a little brown and transfer to plate.
(If adding prawns, fry prawns until they're cooked and also transfer out to a plate because I don't like prawns to be too overcooked)
2. Fry onion first, then add seasoned pork/chicken and fry until cooked.
3. Add chye sim and fry until cooked.
4. Repeat the above with beansprouts.
5. Add yellow noodles and tomato sauce, chili sauce and light soy sauce (I mixed the 3 sauces in a bowl for convenience)
6. Mix well and continue adding crab sticks, tomatoes, tau gua and prawns.
7. Mix them into the noodles and ensure that the other ingredients are evenly interspersed among the noodles.
8. Beat eggs in a bowl and pour onto noodles. Mix well and ensure the eggs are cooked and it's ready to be served!

Didn't know that frying noodles can be so easy and quick. It's just the preparation phase that is difficult and time consuming. My family commented that it tasted nice so I can foresee myself frying this more often in future.

Nope, doesn't look appetizing in such a big wok

Doesn't look that nice up close either.

Only when it has been dished out into a bowl or plate does it look somewhat presentable. But appearances of food doesn't matter at home and I'm not that good at plating.

126

Visited 126 for dim sum with my mum and her colleagues a few months ago. I know I'm so behind with my blog entries but I'll try my best to make it up to date because I'm so excited to blog about Hong Kong and all the nice food! I'll include the addresses of the restaurants and shops with food worth trying, the crystallisation of my hard work from researching for the itinerary.

126 (It's pronounced in cantonese which I fail at so I can't remember how it's supposed to sound)搵到食
126 Sims Avenue
Singapore 387449

It's quite a distance from the nearest MRT station (Aljunied if I'm not wrong), and as we went in the evening, we had no choice but to endure the glances from the uncles who were sitting around at the coffee shop as we walked past. It's safer to go with a male friend who can protect you from those uncles, as I feel that it's not such a safe place to visit at night!

This is all that we ordered! Didn't manage to take individual photos because our chopsticks were too fast. It was quite a spread as the food arrived shortly after we placed our orders. They have the usual dim sum like siew mai and har gao and if memory serves me right, they tasted ordinary. Apart from those, they also have more unique ones like enoki mushroom wrapped with beef slices in black pepper sauce. I remember polishing those off as the rest didn't like it, or were too polite and let me have the king's share of it. Something else worthy of mention was the steamed rice rolls. It wasn't the ordinary steamed rolls stuffed with prawns/char siew. They came in small rolls in thick brown sauce which I felt was really unique and nice. My mum's colleagues liked the kong ba bao, but I felt that it was rather ordinary as well, probably because I don't like fatty food. I peeled apart the entire bun and the pork and left the fat untouched><

Didn't take too much of the fried stuff but I felt that the prawn dumplings were good. The fried beancurd sticks with a blanket of corn mayonnaise was not too bad too, but of course, the mayonnaise had to go.
I will return for their rice rolls, really! And the only thing lacking has got to be my favourite salted egg yolk custard bun! But I finally finally got to try Swee Choon's today! Blog post for that to come up soon, I hope!
